What is EFT?
EFT is a form of psychological acupressure, based on the same energy meridians used in traditional acupuncture to treat physical and emotional ailments for over five thousand years, but without the invasiveness of needles.
Simple tapping with the fingertips is used to input energy into specific meridians on the head and chest while you think about your specific problem – whether it is a traumatic event, an addiction, pain, etc. — and voice positive affirmations.
This combination of tapping the energy meridians and voicing positive affirmation works to clear the ‘short-circuit’ – the emotional block — from your body’s energy system, thus restoring your mind and body’s balance, which is essential for optimal health and the healing of physical disease.
How does EFT work?
Your body retains memories of events that have long been forgotten or minimised by the conscious mind.
For example you may have been through a difficult social situation that really embarrassed you in your childhood. Even though your logical mind remembers the incident and rationalises it through adult eyes, the body can still hit the fight/flight button in situations that the body perceives have similarities to that past event.
By tapping the energy points whilst accessing the memories of the past event or modern instances the disruptive energy field is dissipated.
What happens during a session?
The therapist will explore the emotions that are operating in the context of the problem situation.
This will allow an initialising statement to be voiced whilst accessing certain pressure points. Then the abbreviated statement will be associated with a round of tapping which includes an EMDR element to further disrupt the patterning.
The therapist will keep you in touch with the live emotion with a constant commentary on the emotional event.
The level of emotional intensity will be scaled before and after rounds of tapping.
